PSY - Gangnam Style

Gangnam Style is a K-pop song by South Korean musician PSY, from his 2012 sixth studio album Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1.

Psy wrote and produced the song with Yoo Gun-hyung, with additional production by Yang Hyun-suk.

It was released as the lead single from the album on July 15, 2012, and instantly went viral, infecting the world with the “oppa gangnam style” virus.

The single peaked at Number 1 on South Korea’s Gaon Chart, the same position it attained in 29 other countries. In the US however, it peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, kept from the number-one spot by Maroon 5’s One More Night.

On December 21, 2012, its official video became the first YouTube video to reach one billion views, and has since been viewed over 3.1 billion times until July 10, 2017, when it was surpassed by the music video for See You Again by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth.

In September of 2012, Gangnam Style was recognized by Guinness World Records as the most “liked” video on YouTube.

Consequently, the song as well as its video have bagged numerous awards and have given rise to numerous cover versions and parodies.

Tidbit: Gangnam Style is a Korean slang that refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul.
