Pensioners give Nasarawa 8 days ultimatum over demands

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Nasarawa State chapter, on Monday said it had given the State Government an eight-day ultimatum to pay its members' benefits.

This is contained in a statement issued in Lafia by the union's Chairman, Alhaji Umaru Adoka and Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman.

According to the statement, the demands include harmonisation of pension, payment of gratuity, and payment of the benefits of members who have died.

The statement said that if the state government met their demands, it would go a long way in alleviating the hardship faced by pensioners and their families.

The statement called on the government to increase the monthly allocation for gratuity to enable the state Pension Bureau to pay pensioners promptly.

In the statement, the union expressed concern over the non-implementation of the 36 per cent pension increment in the state.

It stated that the Federal Government had increased the said amount to its workers but that the state's senior citizens were yet to benefit from the gesture.

The statement restated the union's determination to cooperate with Gov. Al-Makura's administration to achieve progress and development in the state.

It called on union members and the people of the state to live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliation.

The statement did not however specify the course of action if the demands were not met within the period.
