Written in 1987 by American singer-songwriter Julie Gold, and recorded originally by Nanci Griffith, From a Distance became an international success after it was recorded in 1990 by Bette Midler for the album Some People’s Lives -which peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200.
The song reached number one (1) on the Adult Contemporary chart and peaked at number two (2) on the Billboard Hot 100. It also went on to win a Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991 and won a “3 Million Airs Award” from Broadcast Music Incorporated as well.
