Carey wrote and produced the song with Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal.

On March 9, 1996, Columbia Records released the track as the third US single and fourth overall single from the album.

After its release, the single found favor with music critics, becoming a commercial success.

It topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and charts in Canada. In the UK, it held down the Number 2 and 3 spots on the R&B and Singles Chart respectively.

It also reached an enviable Number 5 in New Zealand.

Always Be My Baby has earned a platinum certification in the US and silver in the UK.
