We Belong Together is an R&B song by American singer Mariah Carey, taken from her 2005 tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi.
She co-wrote and co-produced the song with Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal. Its lyrics talk about a woman’s desperation for her former lover to return.
Island Records put out the song on March 29, 2005, as the second single from the album and it proved to be Carey’s dire needed musical comeback.
The single literally shattered chart records in the US, becoming Carey’s sixteenth topper on the Billboard Hot 100.
It tied with four other songs as the second longest running number one song in US chart history, behind her 1995 collaboration with Boyz II Men titled One Sweet Day.
We Belong Together also topped the charts in Australia while entering the top five in New Zealand, Canada, Hungary, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Scotland, Spain, and the UK.
